Lytton Springs is een beroemde, aaneengesloten wijngaard (single vineyard) in Dry Creek Valley, met wijnstokken tot wel 100(!) jaar oud. De planten groeien er als ongeleide 'bush vines' laag bij de grond. De arme kiezelrijke en kleihoudende bodem zorgt voor natuurlijk lage rendementen (gem. 30 hl/ha) en een excellente concentratie in de druiven.

Lytton Springs is een blend van hoofzakelijk zinfandel, aangevuld met kleine hoeveelheden petite sirah, carignane en mataro (mourvèdre) voor extra complexiteit. Na de gisting rijpt de wijn veertien maanden in kleine fusten van eerste-, tweede- en derdejaars Amerikaans eikenhout.

Proefnotitie

Deze wijn is diep donkerrood en heeft een rijp en verfijnd aroma van zwarte kersen, laurier, vanille en witte peper. Krachtig, vol en superverleidelijk van smaak, met een opvallend goede drinkbaarheid. De afdronk is kruidig, lang en complex.

Drinken bij

Heerlijk om zo van te genieten of te combineren met verfijnde (vlees)gerechten van de grill.

Houdbaarheid

Gemakkelijk houdbaar tot tien jaar na de oogst. Beluchten in een karaf is aanbevolen, indien jong gedronken.

Ridge Vineyards

Ridge Vineyards in Californië is op organische wijze ontstaan. Het begon met dokter Osea Perrone, die in 1885 een stuk grond kocht boven aan de Monte Bello Ridge. Hij plantte er een wijngaard met uitzicht op de oceaan én de baai van San Francisco. Deze steile wijngaard met zijn arme bodem brengt nog altijd Cabernet Sauvignon van topkwaliteit voort.

Rond 1940 kocht theoloog William Short het bedrijf en voegde er een tweede wijngaard aan toe. Daarna werd het overgenomen door een groep, in 1969 aangevuld met de bevlogen Paul Draper. Hij zorgde er onder andere voor dat er belangrijke wijngaarden aan het bedrijf toegevoegd werden. Zoals Lytton Springs in Dry Creek Valley (ten noorden van San Francisco), beplant met schitterende oude stokken zinfandel.

Paul Draper is ook nu nog verantwoordelijk voor het wijnmaken op Ridge Vineyards. Hij omschrijft zijn stijl als ‘pre-industrieel’; geïnspireerd op het natuurlijke proces van wijnmaken in de negentiende eeuw en gebaseerd op druiven van hoge kwaliteit. Hij grijpt zo min mogelijk in, zodat de wijnen een eigen, herkenbaar karakter hebben – een karakter dat de wijngaard ze meegeeft, niet de wijnmaker. Het levert wereldwijd erkende wijnen op die elegant, licht en complex zijn, eerder ingetogen dan uitbundig: ware klasse.
