Château Petit Gravet Aîné Saint-Émilion Grand Cru
OP = OP

The 2020 Petit Gravet Aîné has a deep garnet-purple color, needing a little swirling to unlock profound notions of preserved plums, blackberry jam and raspberry coulis, plus hints of tar, red roses and dried Provence herbs. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegantly crafted with tightly knit black fruit and savory layers and very fine-grained tannins, lifted with seamless freshness, finishing long and earthy. It is a wine of great restraint and with a quiet intensity that will reward the patient.

I continue to love the wines from this estate, and the 2020 Château Petit Gravet Aîné looks to be another beautiful wine in a sequence of beautiful wines. Offering an incredible Cabernet Franc character in its floral, spring herb, violet, and darker fruit-driven aromas and flavors, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, brilliant purity of fruit, and a rich, concentrated, yet precise and focused style on the palate...

The 2020 Petit Gravet Aîné dazzles with its extraordinary purity, focus and delineation. The Cabernet Franc is especially prominent in the 2020, a wine of brilliance and superb purity. Crushed rose petal, mocha, cinnamon, sweet red cherry and blood orange all race across the palate. A whole range of bright, mineral-infused notes punctuates the finish. Petit Gravet Aîné is an absolutely brilliant wine.

Based largely on Cabernet Franc (there's 20% Merlot), the 2019 Château Petit Gravet Aîné offers a more Médoc-like bouquet of darker currants, lead pencil shavings, tobacco leaf, and chocolate. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Saint-Emilion that has some classic Right Bank chalky minerality, a focused, seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a beautiful, elegant, classy wine that will round into form with just 4-6 years of bottle age, and I can't imagine it not evolving gracefully for over two decades.

Tightly tucked fruit on the nose. There's plenty of youthful candied berries on the palate, and remarkably soft tannins for such a youngster. Aromatic oak spice, incredibly moreish right now – this is charm itself to drink, despite the compressed nose. A really very impressive specimen.

Has any Bordeaux château realized a more wholesale stylistic revolution in so short a time than Troplong Mondot? Since Aymeric de Gironde arrived at the estate in late 2017, the ultra powerful "shock and awe" style of the 2000s is out, and a new refinement is in. Of course, the deep clays that define the core vineyards around the château itself are never likely to produce light or ephemeral wines, but de Gironde has astutely understood that (to develop an analogy), when driving down hill, one can ease off on the accelerator...

The purity of fruit is pretty phenomenal here with blackcurrants, cherries and crushed-stone undertones. Floral notes of roses and violets, too. Full-bodied, yet this is a linear style with super fine tannins and great length and beauty. You really want to drink it. It grows on the palate and shows real power, with breadth and depth. Remains fresh throughout. Really something. Try after 2026.
